ACTION ALERT | Final Push for Inclusive ENDA Bill
Dear Friend of NCLR:
As soon as tomorrow, the House of Representatives could vote on HB 3685, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). In its current form, the bill has been stripped of protections for “gender identity.”
However, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin has offered an amendment to attempt to re-insert these protections. We must show our support for this amendment today! Please contact your representative to urge him or her to VOTE YES ON THE BALDWIN AMENDMENT TO ENDA!
Earlier today, President Bush announced that if ENDA is passed this Congress, he intends to veto it. We know this battle is not over. But the vote on ENDA in the House this week will shape the political debate on ENDA in the years to come. Today’s calls to our Representatives asking them to support the Baldwin Amendment will lay the foundation for the passage of a strong and inclusive bill in the next Congress. Please do not let this historic opportunity go by!
In the past three weeks, the LGBT community has spoken with unprecedented unity and power. Never before have our elected federal representatives heard from so many of us—and they are taking notice! In years to come, we will look back on these few weeks as a watershed moment in our history, when for the first time, LGBT individuals and organizations across the country demonstrated our political strength in a truly new way. In the weeks and years ahead, we have the potential to win full equality for our community if we stand together and support the elected officials who have the courage to stand with us.
If you live in Northern California, it is essential that you contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and urge her to support the Baldwin Amendment and encourage other members of Congress to do the same. Email or call 202.225.4965 and ask her to actively work for the passage of the Baldwin Amendment.
Across the country, it is critical to call your representatives and urge them to support the Baldwin Amendment. Please call today and again tomorrow as we lead up to the vote. Your call will make a difference.
In the words of Ruth Gordon, “courage, like a muscle, is strengthened by use.” Thank you for the calls you have made in the past weeks and please continue to join us in making our collective voice heard.
